St. George's Hockey Trip to Guernsey
Our Hockey 'A' team enjoyed a day trip to Guernsey to play against ECJS Beechwood, after failing to make it to their tournament in March, because the flight was cancelled.
Travelling on Condor was a new experience for some and they enjoyed feeling the breeze outside on deck. Beechwood kindly put out three evenly balanced sides for us to play in a triangular tournament. In the first match the team was a little rusty and slow to get going but thanks to good defensive play by Zac Mallinson and Hector Somay St. George's had plenty of possession but just could not convert. Beechwood had two shots at goal both of which they converted. In the second match Lance Armstrong and Olive Smith combined well up front and were unlucky not to score. Sidney Barrowcliffe and Sydney Smith also made some good attacking moves but excellent goalkeeping from Beechwood kept St. George's at bay. Despite some excellent tackles by Ben Cleary and Keanu O' Donoghue Beechwood scored 3 goals. In the last match St. George's were determined to score, Johnny Wright was solid in defence and William Ruff in goal made some good saves. St. George's kept attacking and had several shots saved. Beechwood made the most of a quick break and scored the only goal of the match. In the dying seconds St. George's were awarded a penalty corner but the back of the net could not be found much to the disappointment of all the team. The children were hosted by Beechwood for lunch at their school and in the afternoon played cricket on Pembroke beach before returning to Jersey on the ferry.
