St. George’s ’A’ 6 v VCP 1
St. George’s ’A’ team continued their winning combination with a convincing win against VCP. Against the run of play, VCP opened the scoring. St. George’s replied quickly when William Harris converted a cross from Sam Thompson. The second goal for St. George’s was identical to the first, making the score at half time 2. : 1
In the second half, St. George’s were dominant and stopped the VCP attacks in mid- field. Sam Thompson scored the third goal after quickly intercepting a goal kick. William Harris displayed some fancy footwork in front of the goal to score his hat trick. Good team work resulted in the 5th goal; Jack Harrison made a good tackle in the defending area, Patrick McKimmon cleared to Sam Thompson who used his speed down the right wing to score. The final goal was a classic Sam Thompson cross from the right to William Harris who neatly slotted it home.
This was an excellent team effort and they now look forward to the 7 a-side tournament at FB on Wed 14th November where they will be up against the strongest Under 11 teams in the island.
St. George’s ’B’ 1 v VCP 11.
St. George’s ’B’ team were faced with very strong opposition from VCP reserves. Despite some excellent quick reaction saves by Matthew Dingle in goal, St. George’s were 7 : 0 down at half time.
In the second half, St. George’s kept trying and eventually with Jack Peggie, Gigi Cooke and Toby Balderson combining well, they were rewarded with a corner. Toby took it and Jack converted. This raised the team’s spirits and they battled on despite VCP scoring four more. Final score 11 : 1 to VCP.
St George’s v St Michael’s
St George’s A team achieved their first win of the season against St. Michael’s on Saturday. This was an enjoyable and entertaining match right from the start. St. George’s attacked from the whistle, Sam Thompson using his speed to break up the defence. St. George’s had several shots but none hit the target. Against the run of play St. Michael’s made a quick break and opened the scoring with a well struck shot. After half time both teams returned determined. Good defending by Oliver Griggs and quick passing allowed Sam Thompson to equalize. In the last ten minutes both teams battled hard. St. George’s continued to pressurise the St. Michael’s goal and in the last few minutes William Harris converted a good cross from Sam Thompson making the final score 2 : 1 to St. George’s. This was a good team effort and a well deserved win, well done boys.
The B team match was a completely different affair. Missing their captain, and strong striker, Toby Balderson, through injury the B team struggled from the onset. St. Michael’s pressurised the St. George’s goal from the start but luckily for St. George’s most of their shots were wide except for one. In the second half St. George’s kept trying to attack and Gigi Cooke made several good runs down the left wing. St. Michael’s picked up on some of St. George’s defensive errors and were soon several goals ahead. In the dying minutes Sam Roberts had a good try at goal for St. George’s and just failed to score. Despite the 0 : 6 result the B team must be commended for never giving up.
Trinity v St George’s
In their second league game St. George’s travelled to Trinity. However, the whole A team threw off its travel weariness and the match was again closely contested. St. George’s were 3 : 2 down at half time despite our best efforts but following the half time pep talk they fought back in the second half and Sam Thompson scored the equalizer. An open game continued with neither side able to break the deadlock and a draw was probably a fair result given the effort both sides put into the match.
The B team again faced strong opposition. They were slow to settle and did not make enough use of the space, the ’bees around the honey pot syndrome’ being very much in evidence !! Gigi Cooke scored the only goal for St. George’s, a well struck shot taken from an acute angle from the left. However, this effort was not enough and the final score was 7 : 1 to Trinity.
St George’s v St Mary
Our first match was a home game against St. Mary. This proved a very close encounter for the A team. St. George’s settled quickly and were soon two goals up through Sam Thompson and Oliver Griggs. St. Mary’s fought back to equalize by half time. Both teams fought for every ball in the second half and there was little separating the two. St. Mary’s pulled ahead but St. George’s continued to pressurise St. Mary’s goal. A fine shot from Sam Thompson hit the post in the dying seconds but the final score was 3: 2 to St. Mary.
The B team game was a very different affair. This was the first proper match for several of the St. George’s players. St. Mary’s were short of players and had to include some of their A team. However, despite the final result 8 : 2 to St. Mary, St. George’s came off the pitch having enjoyed the experience and having learnt from the match. Gigi Cooke performed well on her debut and scored a good goal. She also combined well with Toby Balderson up front who scored the other goal.
