Form V Explore the Great Outdoors

Have you wished that you could have more lessons outdoors during the summer term? On Monday 7th June 2010 afternoon that’s what we did!  Already changed into home clothes, with clip boards in hand, we set off into the school grounds with Mrs Gill and Mrs Jones. Our theme for the afternoon was texture.

We settled in an area where there were lots of contrasting natural textures to explore and then decided on ideas for sketching. Mrs Gill advised us of different ways to interpret the different textures, like the roughness and fraying of the rotting wood for example. We attempted to show the contrast between light and shade in our sketches too. Lots of people chose to sketch the silver birch tree, sitting under the tree to sketch the picture looking through the branches. Mrs Jones was busy with her camera and framed us busy sketching.

When our outdoor art lesson came to an end we said thank you to Mrs Gill and divided into two groups. Half the class joined Mrs Le Neveu for long jump and the rest of us went on our ’Texture Trail’ with Mrs Jones.   Using a sketch map, our challenge was to navigate a course following the correct route. Each time we found a marker or flag we stopped to complete a ’Texture Task’ and to hole-punch our map with the correct code. We worked in twos and threes with Mrs Jones starting us off at different destinations on our map.

We collected natural objects like fir cones, shiny leaves, sycamore keys in a ’treasure bag’.  We did bark rubbings of different trees too. The helicopter activity was brilliant – we all want to do that again! At half time the long jumpers and map readers swapped over. We are already looking forward to being outdoors for lessons again.
