Chess Championships

The Jersey Primary Schools Lightning Chess tournament took place at St George’s School with five different schools being represented and over 40 children taking part.  In lightning chess the buzzer sounds every ten seconds and each player has to play their move in that time.  The rapid speed of the games means that five games can be played by each player in the space of a few hours.  The winner of the tournament was Jordan Rive from St George’s.

The Island Primary Schools Chess tournament took place at Springfield School where over 50 children participated in the event that was spread over two afternoons.  There were two age groups, under ten years and under eleven years.  The youngest competitors were six years old.  Children from St George’s chess club enjoyed the opportunity to play against children from other schools and widen their experience of the game.  Particular mention must be made of Thor Tiefenthal who used his knowledge of scholar’s mate to win five of his games.  He went on to win the under ten tournament and was presented with the winning shield by Mr Iain George, the headmaster of Springfield School.  The runners up were Maxime Bouten, Marianne Enget and Niam Patel - a clean sweep by children of St George’s.
