Hockey Club 2009-2010
Throughout the autumn and spring terms children in Forms IV – VI have the chance to join hockey club. The club runs every week in the sports hall, but the children also have the opportunity to play at Les Quennevais on the astro pitch. Several friendly mini matches, 7 aside across half a pitch, are played against other hockey playing schools which include Victoria College Prep, J.C.G. Prep., Grouville and Plat Douet. In September we start by mixing all the children up into teams. This gives those just starting to play a chance to play alongside children with a little more experience. However after a few weeks the children are ready to play in their own school teams. The culmination of these friendly matches is the Deutsche Bank Primary Schools Festival.
This year St. George’s entered ’A’ and ’B’ teams. The slightly older ’A’ team performed very well with wins against Grouville 1:0, Quackers 3:0, VCP white 1:0 and a draw against VCP brown 0:0. They emerged the winners of the Major tournament and received a trophy and medals. The ’B’ team battled hard against their opposition and managed a 0:0 draw against JCG while losing the other three matches to finish third in the Minor tournament.
It is most encouraging to see the children developing their skills and understanding of the game throughout the two terms and I very much look forward to next year’s hockey club.
