Form III Visit to Durrell Jan 2010

Form IIIM’s trip to Durrell

Form IIIM have been learning all about teeth as part of their science topic this term. This provided an excellent opportunity to visit Durrell to have a close look at animal’s teeth. We were met by Naomi who firstly showed us some hissing cockroaches which the braver ones amongst us were able to stroke!

She then told us about the three different types of teeth; incisors, canines and molars and told us what each of them were used for.She told us that if an animal has long canines it is probably a carnivore, if it has box-shaped molars it is probably a herbivore and if it has both it is an omnivore. We were then shown some animals’ skulls which we were asked to identify as belonging to a carnivore, a herbivore or an omnivore. We were able to hold the skulls and have a really close look. After checking through our answers we had a walk around the zoo to see some of the animals’ teeth in action. Not only did we learn a huge amount from our visit, we also had a great time!
