Bonfire Night 2009

After being postponed due to bad weather on the 5th November we all enjoyed a Bonfire Night Extravaganza on Tuesday 10th  November 2009.    The weather on the day was torrential rain and to set up was quite a challenge, but the GA and facilities team battled through and produced a marvellous event.   By evening the rain stopped and over 500 people turned up to enjoy this special occasion, a highlight in the St George’s social calendar.

The pumpkin competition was a hit as always with the children and resulted in some impressive creations.    Father Martin had great difficulty choosing the final winners, but after much deliberation the winners are as follows:

Lucy and Isabelle Griffiths (Nursery and Reception)

Eleanor O’Sullivan KS I

Peter Le Couteur (KS II)

The Cooke family (Family)

This year all entrants received a certificate of achievement and more importantly a glow stick.

There was a magnificent selection of food for us all to enjoy including Chicken Curry, Chilli-Con-Carne, Hot-dogs, Pasta and the Pig Roast which were all delicious!   The candy floss, toffee apples and cakes stands enticed you to visit on more than one occasion and a glass of gluwein went down extremely well.

This year the fireworks organised by James Bevis and the team at Starburst Fireworks were absolutely fantastic.  They started with a real bang and were followed by an assortment of fireworks culminating in an impressive finish.   There was a roar of applause at the end, which was certainly deserved.   We also gave a couple of airplanes a rare treat at they left the airport and some of the children were convinced the ground shook as the fireworks went off!

The event concluded with the lighting of the bonfire and catching up on news with friends, children recalling their favourite firework or how did they get their glowstick out of the tree!

Thank you GA for a great night.
