Lepra Assembly May 09

In the last week of April, Rosalind Kerry joined a morning assembly to tell us about the work of LEPRA.   Leprosy is a cruel disease which ruins the lives of over 2 million people, young and old, throughout the world.  It is the oldest disease known to man.  People who suffer with leprosy struggle through life as they lose the use of their hands and their feet.

However, there is a cure which is cheap and effective – just £21.00 will help cure one person of leprosy and turn their life around.  Despite this, 600,000 new patients are diagnosed each year, many of them children.  This means that every minute of every day one more person is found to have leprosy.  Mrs Kerry’s presentation struck a note with our children who asked her some very searching questions.  They were clearly moved by what they had heard and wanted to help.

Two weeks later, all the children from Reception to Form VI took part in a ’Fun Workout’ session with Popsy Johns from Fitness First.  The session reminded children how lucky we are to be fit and healthy.

We also used the activity to raise funds for LEPRA and invited parents and friends to make voluntary donations.  Amazingly we were able to hand over £1786.10 to LEPRA and know that we have helped to cure 84 people of leprosy.
