Form V visit States Chambers
We met Mr McLoughlin from the Greffier in the Royal Square and went up stairs to the States’ Chamber.
On each seat, the children found a message left for them by the States’ member who normally sat there.
The children were shown the personal microphones and voting buttons used by the States’ member. It was explained that the Dean’s chair was the exception; it had a microphone to allow him to speak but no voting button.
Mr McLoughlin stood in as Bailiff and conducted our proposal: ’It is important to wear helmets when cycling on the roads.’
Joshua Gill was the Court Usher and he was not allowed to walk across the centre of the States’ Chamber. He had to bow to the Greffier and the Bailiff, go out of the nearest door with a message and enter the States’ Chamber through another door closest to the recipient of the message. He walked a long way that morning!
It was a unique insight into the mechanics of the States’ Chamber and an experience many of us will never see again; unless of course you become a States’ Member in later years!
