Be Safe - Be Seen

Darren and Christina, journalists from Channel 103, brought a touch of excitement to St George’s this week, when the children were able to hear themselves live on the radio!  The purpose of their visit was to reinforce the all-important message ’Be safe-be seen!’ being pioneered by their radio station and sponsored by the IFM Trust Group.   As the days shorten and poor weather often brings poor visibility, both pedestrians and cyclists are at increased risk of being struck by vehicles who fail to see them clearly.

During assembly time there was a quiz to reinforce sensible ways of being seen and being safe. Fortunately the school achieved full marks! There followed much excitement when Christina ’phoned Peter Mac, live on his breakfast show, and the children were invited to shout out the slogan, cheer and scream! The children were then offered free "Be Safe-Be Seen" reflective stickers to put on their coats and bags.

These are the points that we hope the children will have taken away with them:

1.     When walking, always face oncoming traffic.

2.     Make sure you choose a well-lit place when crossing the road.

3.     Wear light-coloured clothing and reflective jackets in poor visibility.

4.     Always have lights on your bicycles and make sure they work.

5.     Stop, look and listen before you cross the road.

Thanks to Channel 103 and the IFM Trust Group for putting across such an important message in a fun way!
