Form II Visit The Oyster Frm
On Tuesday 3rd June Form II visited the Oyster Farm. The trip was organised as part of Environment Week, but had to be undertaken a week earlier due to the time of the tides. The aim of the trip was to examine the environmental issues linked to the oyster and mussel farming beds around Jersey’s coastline.
The sun came out just in time as we set off for Gorey in the mini bus and a fleet of cars. As soon as we arrived at the beach, we set out the rugs for our picnic lunch on the pebbles. Following our lunch we were met by Steve who took us down to where the oysters and mussels are grown and farmed. In pairs we took a bucket and were challenged to find as many sea creatures as we could in the rock pools on the shore. We were also armed with an information sheet for the purpose of looking up what we had found. Our buckets began to rapidly fill with razor fish, crabs of all sizes and even some star fish. Of course the creatures were all returned to the safety of the sea once we had all had a good look at them.
We had a fantastic afternoon and are now much more aware that the beach is never an empty place and have gained an appreciation of our beautiful coastline and the importance of looking after it because of the variety of life that it sustains.
