Nursery - today is Monday

The first day of another busy week in the Nursery and the morning is in full swing by the time the last of the children have arrived.

This half term we have been ’Up, Up and Away’ cutting out aeroplanes, painting kites and sewing baskets for hot air balloons which now form part of the role play area that we have turned into an airport – no hold ups at check-out or lost luggage when we are in charge!

With friends to talk to while using one of a variety of activities on offer or being introduced to a new task for the week by one of the teachers, time flies past and 9.30 quickly arrives which means half of us will go to the Colombier for music with Mrs Smith while the reminder carry on with their chosen game.

Mrs Smith plays her piano or guitar and we sing a mixture of old favourites and new songs as part of our current topic but will we have percussion instruments today?  We will have to wait and see.   Once the second group of children have returned from the Colombier it is time to tidy away the things we have been using and with everyone helping the tables and floor are soon clear and we have time for a story before snack time.

Quite often someone brings a book from home, frequently one we have not seen before, and they stand up and tell us about it before it is read by one of the teachers.

We can now recognise our written name without the help of our symbols and so it only takes a few moments for any of us to find where we are sitting when our name is called.  For snack we can choose between milk and water to drink and today there is a variety of fresh fruit and bread sticks to eat.  Just before the bell for break time rings a teacher will tell us where she would like us to put our name cards this morning, we have to listen carefully because it is somewhere different every day and maybe next to, or in, an item from the Interest Table.

If it is raining we will have to put on our Wellingtons before going out into the walled garden and if it is sunny we will need our sun hats but at last we are able to run around with our friends, possibly have a turn on a tricycle, use a swing, climb on the climbing frame and, not to be forgotten, play in the sand pit where we can see who can dig the deepest holes or build the biggest castles.  The bell to stop is soon heard and we have to stand still until the teacher on duty asks us to walk and line up – we can find this difficult to remember at times!

Once back in the Nursery we need to get ready for P.E. with Mrs Morgan-Pasquali including using the lavatory and washing our hands.  The walk to the sports hall gives us the opportunity to look at the world around us, may be we will see a squirrel or the school tractor will be in use.  We also need to remember how to cross a road safely by using the crossing and listening and looking for vehicles on the road.  The summer term means sports afternoon which gives us the opportunity to show our parents the skills we have been learning and practising throughout the year.  Mrs Morgan-Pasquali has taught us how to catch and throw, run and pick up balls, hopscotch, weave in and out of cones, jump hurdles and many other sporting skills.

P.E. is followed by lunch in the dining hall for most of us although a few children return to the Nursery before going home.  For those at lunch some will remain until 3.30 while others will be met at 1.15 but regardless of the time we leave we will all meet up again when....

Tomorrow will be Tuesday ...... .......
