Form VI go to Green Island

Tuesday 6th May

All the members of Form VI spent a lovely day looking under rocks for any interesting inhabitants.  Mrs Julia Meldrum, a countryside and seaside officer from the Education Department, showed everyone what to look for and how to look after the habitats of the seashore creatures we encountered.  Everyone was desperate to catch the biggest crab and it did not take long for Ruby Fern to find the winner, an Edible crab that took up the whole of the bottom of her bucket.

As we followed the tide out the habitats changed and so did the depth of the rock-pools, although in some places it varied greatly, much to the surprise of William Hall and Lucas Rosenthal-Kenny, who ended up wading in water up to their waists.  Needless to say, it was so hot and sunny, that they did not take too long to dry out and seemed not to care.  Thankfully it did not spur the rest of the Form to follow suit.

We discovered many interesting facts along the way, including one about the carnivorous slipper limpets, who prey on poor limpet shells and drill holes into them and then suck out their contents. Yuck!  Also it was interesting to hear about the limpet themselves and how they clamp so tightly to rocks that they actually leave a little indent where they have been.

After turning over many rocks, and putting them back of course, the group returned to the sandy part of the beach for lunch and then the compulsory sandcastle or defensive dam building activities.

All in all, with fantastic sunshine, a huge spring tide and lots of good company, everyone had a lovely time and can’t wait for summer to come so they can go and do it all again!
